“I Open at the Close”

Music: Nico Stai (Dead Pony, Miss Friday Album)

"be ready to open up to all possibilities"

“I open at the close”: Yes I am quoting Harry Potter on this one. You know that phrase left by Professor Dumbledore on the snitch for Harry. Well yeah, you know the drill on this if you grew up with Harry, Hermoine and Ron but in case you didn’t see the movie (and you hadn’t read the book) I understand. Tho I urge you to google it just so you would know what it means. This post is not about Harry Potter by the way, just the quote. Well then, moving on.

This would be my year ender blog post, thus the phrase/quote. I am changing the meaning, rather than having death in mind, it simply means the end of something and a beginning of another. Yes, you got it: New Years!

I am not actually big on plans; I used to believe that planning usually lead to disappointments - then came bucket list. Plans make you raise your expectations and the dreaded disappointment knocks on your door. You would argue that the statement above is coming from a pessimist, no my friends, it came from a realist. I am not talking about work here that is a whole lot of a different angle. Rather than making full blown plans down to the very last step and period for what your year would be – social/personal life aspect in case you did not pick it up first on, just lower it down a notch to a bucket list. For me, planning is different from goal setting. I set my goals, and then take all possible strategies to make it work. Ah but this would be a different argument all together so I would stop right here.

If some of you are not familiar with what a bucket list is, it is just a simple wish-list you want to achieve for the months, or years to come. I started this back in 2001, on my first year in university. I really did not know what I needed to do with life, 10 years later at the end of 2011 the long term things on the list have somewhat been achieved. I just need 2 more on that top 5 to cross out, which would still take a while. The short ones are just for material gain and they have been achieved even though it took few months or a year.

So that was a long explanation and would have probably bored you out, but let us get on with what I really mean with “I open at the close”. Simple, 2011 is ending and 2012 is coming. This year has been a rollercoaster ride, as it is should be. Life in plateau is boring, so take the rollercoaster ride full on. Surprises, a lot of laughter, a lot of gratitude, adventure, blessings as well as heartache, you name it 2011 gave them all to me. But as the year closes, it would not be difficult to once again to open up to all possibilities 2012 can give you. It would not hurt to update your bucket list, make goals and raise your hopes up once again even if 2011 was dreadful to you – if you think that way. But I urge you to remember the simple moments that have given your simple joys in life, put them together, I am pretty sure at the end of the year, you will have a smile painted on your face or maybe even laughing so hard while you are at it.

Welcome the year 2012 full on. Be optimistic as well as a realist. Open up to new beginnings at the close.

Happy New Year guys – to you who even read these simple ramblings.
